Maciejewski: Complete Piano Mazurkas
USD 29.99
Premiere recording of all the Roman Maciejewski mazurkas for piano on a double album, performed by Anna Brozek. The Polish-American pianist, organist, choral conductor, and composer, Roman Maciejewski, was born of Polish parents in Berlin. His mother taught him to play piano at the age of 5. from 1916 to 1919 he studied at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin with S. Goldenweiser. He then studied with Zeleski at the State Conservatory in Poznan, from which he received his diploma as a concert pianist in 1922. He also studied composition with Wiechowicz in Poznan. While still a very young man, he was director of the largest choir in Poznan (S. Moniuszko Choir). In 1932 he entered the Academy of Music in Warsaw, where he studied with Szymanowski and Sikorski, but left without completing his studies to embark on a tour of the Balkan states with recitals of his own piano compositions. He went to Paris in 1934, and studied with Nadia Boulanger. At a performance of his concerto for two pianos in London Roman Maciejewski met Kurt Joos who then commissioned music for two ballets. In 1939 Maciejewski began his first "Swedish" period - he married a Swedish dancer and lived in Sweden for 12 years, active as a composer and pianist. He composed music for several theater productions of Ingmar Bergman, including Camus's Kaligula. While in Sweden, he began his life-work, the Missa pro defunctis - Requiem, which he finished fifteen years later. This monumental piece is dedicated to all the victims of all wars and remains Maciejewski's best known and highest-regarded composition. After World War II, in 1951 (or 1952), he moved from Sweden to the USA and spent a period of 26 years in California, living in Redondo Beach, working as the organist for two Catholic churches, and directing the "Roman Choir". During his American years, Maciejewski composed a number of choral pieces and masses. In 1977 he moved back to Sweden, settling in Gotteborg where he died in 1998.

Christmas Music: Emma Kirkby & London Baroque
USD 95.37
A disc of Christmas chestnuts would seem to be almost obligatory for any classical recording star. How odd that, after 20 years and almost 100 records, Emma Kirkby has only now, in the year 2000, made her very own Christmas album. It's admirably free of kitsch as holiday collections go--even the title is unassuming--and the few chestnuts there are (Pachelbel's Canon and Gigue, Corelli's "Christmas" concerto grosso, Bach's "Air on the G String") get alert, gracious, and thoroughly winning performances from the seven instrumentalists of London Baroque. The Divine Miss Em herself sounds just a bit quavery in two Advent-themed arias from Bach cantatas, but she brings to two solo cantatas by Alessandro Scarlatti the silvery tone, intelligent musicianship, and generally enchanting quality her many admirers have always prized. Perhaps the nicest treat of all is on the disc's opening track: a captivating arrangement by one Phillip Friedrich Böddecker of the German chorale tune "Resonet in laudibus / Joseph lieber, Joseph mein"--in a performance that demonstrates why Emma Kirkby is a treasure. --Matthew Westphal

Cielo e Mar
USD 25.97
Cielo e mar is available in a standard jewel version and also in this limited edition deluxe package, which features a hard cover booklet with 68 pages including the original recording (1 CD). It also includes a four-language booklet (English, French, German, Spanish) and five language libretti (Italian, English, French, German, Spanish), additional photo and text material, and a short synopsis for each aria track by track. Exuberant and charismatic, Rolando Villazón is the tenor of today. Here he releases his first solo album on Deutsche Grammophon. The soaring title track from Ponchielli s La Gioconda inspired Villazón to become a singer. Here it is the starting point for an intriguing album which moves far beyond the usual greatest tenor hits . Less familiar masterpieces by Boito, Cilea and Verdi feature alongside little-known Donizetti arias and rarities by Gomes, Mercadante and Pietri. The album is Villazón s personal homage to his illustrious predecessors in the lyric-dramatic repertoire great tenors such as Bergonzi, Caruso and Domingo. Cielo e mar offers something special for connoisseurs of opera, Villazón s many fans and mainstream listeners who will be gripped by the beauty of both his voice and the music.

The BBC's Jazz Book of the Year for 2008. Few jazz musicians have had the lasting influence or attracted as much scholarly study as John Coltrane. The John Coltrane Reference features a a day-by-day chronology, which extends from 1926-1967, detailing Coltrane's early years and every live performance given by Coltrane as either a sideman or leader, and a discography offering full session information from the first year of recordings, 1946, to the last, 1967.
